The name ‘Darjeeling’ likely derives from the Tibetan words dorje, meaning ‘thunderbolt’, and ling, meaning ‘place’ or ‘land’: ‘the land of the thunderbolt’. This was once the name of a Buddhist monastery situated on top of what is now Observatory Hill,
