About Hotel Norbu House
Greetings from Sikkim, the erstwhile Kingdom and now the 22nd state of India. It is my pleasure to introduce to you the unparalleled Sikkimese hospitality through our family venture NORBU HOTELS.
It is a refurbished family home which dates back to our grandfather, the late Galey Lama who was the Head Monk ( Dorjee Lopon ) of Machong monastery in East Sikkim. The hotel is a labour of love between my father, Passang Norbu Bhutia a retired bureaucrat and I, Thinlay Bhutia ( presently pursuing my PhD from Delhi Univ. ) The hotel is thus a fusion of my grandfather's rich cultural and religious past, my father's varied experiences during the period of Sikkim's turbulent transition (from a kingdom to a state in the world's largest democratic Republic) and my contemporary leanings in the new modern Sikkim.
All of the above have merged into our dream project. The entrance to the lobby/ foyer has been embellished with carved artwork of the eight lucky signs which are auspicious symbols in Buddhism. Every room has a hallway constructed by local artists from Machong, our ancestral home. The entire artwork is black and gold and is redolent of the old Sikkimese grandeur. Situated in Gangtok on National Highway 10 it is walkable distance from Gangtok town and conveniently located for those tourists who want to vacation away from the crowds yet near enough to avail of its comforts.
