Sikkim is a state in northeast India, bordered by Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal. Part of the Himalayas, the area has a dramatic landscape that includes India’s highest mountain, 8,586m Kangchenjunga. Sikkim is also home to glaciers, alpine meadows and thousands of varieties of wildflowers Sikkim is the only state in India with an ethnic Nepali majority.

Sikkim has 11 official languages: Most residents of Sikkim are Lepchas, Bhutias and Nepalese. English is taught in schools and used in government documents. Sikkim is a basin surrounded on three sides by precipitous mountain walls. There is little lowland, and the variation in relief is extreme. Within a stretch of roughly 50 miles (80 km), the land rises from an elevation of about 750 feet (225 metres) in the Tista River valley to nearly 28,200 feet (8,600 metres) at Kanchenjunga, India’s highest peak and the world’s third highest mountain. The Singalila Range separates Sikkim from Nepal in the west, while the Dongkya Rang.

Sikkim Bordered by China, Nepal and Bhutan, Sikkim has long been regarded as one of the last Himalayan Shangri-las. Sikkim is situated at the foot of Mount Kanchendzonga and boasts of an unexplored beauty.

Sikkim Airport

Pakyong Airport is a greenfield RCS airport near Gangtok, the state capital of Sikkim, India . The airport, spread over 201 acres and  is located at Pakyong town about 31 km south of Gangtok. Pakyong Airport is one of the five highest airports in India Bagdogra near Siliguri, 125 km from Gangtok is the nearest airport to the state. Regular flights connect it to the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata .A number of airlines such as IndiGo, Air India, Jet Airways, AirAsia India, GoAir and SpiceJet operate regular flights from prime Indian cities including Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Guwahati and Kolkata for Gangtok

Sikkim Railway

Nearest railway stations to Sikkim are Jalpaiguri (187 km) and Siliguri (146 km), that are well-connected to major cities like Kolkata, Guwahati, Delhi and Mumbai. There are few trains that operate from Kolkata to Jalpaiguri, which is 593 km away.

Sikkim By road:

The capital city of Sikkim, Gangtok enjoys amazing road connectivity with neighbouring and nearby cities including Darjeeling (96 km), Siliguri (118 km) and Kalimpong (75 km), to name mention a few. One can easily get luxury and roadways and state run buses from Siliguri, Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong for Gangtok.

Bus service is available between Siliguri and Gangtok. Sikkim Nationalized Transport (SNT) operates Sikkim state run buses from its bus terminal at Siliguri (close to the Tenzing Norgay Central Bus Terminal on Hill Cart Road). From NJP you can take an Auto Rickshaw and reach the bus terminus in about 10-15 minutes
